Born in Vermilion Bay on September 27, 1933 to Elsie (Schultz) and Henry Appel on the property where she lived most of her life. She married Arnie on April 18, 1953 and with him raised four energetic sons.
Joyce was a dedicated hockey mom, Kinette, and United Church volunteer. She also thoroughly enjoyed her time spent playing women’s baseball.
Together with Arnie, they built the family cabin on Edward Lake.
Joyce always volunteered her time; for some years with the Awana youth group, and also with the Happy Go Lucky Seniors of Vermilion Bay. As well as attending the Vermilion Bay United Church she gave her time to ensure the church remained viable in the community.
Joyce enjoyed quilting with Vermilion Bay quilting group, giving many of her lovingly completed projects to family. Joining the local Horticultural Club, she gamely tried any craft or project.
Joyce had a productive vegetable garden every season, caring for her perennial and annual flowers as well.
Together, Arnie and Joyce took pleasure in the care of their large yard and gardens. Joyce loved blueberry picking, watching the birds at her feeders and even the voracious deer walking through the yard.
She made many friends throughout her lifetime and maintained her friendships.
Joyce was lucky to have three devoted sisters, spending lively and happy times with them. Joyce was a proud and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Rest in peace, you have earned your rest.
A Memorial Service was held Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at the First United Church in Vermilion Bay with Pastor Greg McKee officiating. Interment of ashes will be at a later date.
